FRIDAY 16 NOV 2012
A roadside vigil will take place on Friday 16 November at 5pm outside the London College of Communication at Elephant and Castle, Southwark, to commemorate those killed on London’s roads in the last year.
The Elephant & Castle roundabout no doubt being selected because it is the most dangerous junction for cyclists in the whole of the UK, let alone London with 142 reported injuries to cyclists between 2005-2011 on the North and South roundabout.
Despite an estimated UK wide increase in cycling of only 2.2%, reported cycle accidents increased by 6.8% in Southwark, between 2010 and 2011. This puts Southwark fourth on the list of number of cycling accidents in the Greater London Local Authorities.
The Mayor of London, members of the London Assembly and the leader and councillors of the Borough of Southwark have been invited to attend.
The London Cycling Campaign in conjunction with Living Streets and Road Peace are calling for a number of changes to the roundabout:
- Introduce enforced 20mph speed limits on all of these roads,
- Improve cycle safety on the Northern Roundabout,
- Create more pedestrian crossings and
- Narrow carriageways on St George’s Road and Newington Causeway.
