Despite the estimated number of miles cycled having only increased by 2.2%, according to the latest department for transport figures, the actual number of cyclists killed or seriously injured in Great Britain has increased by 15.2% from 2010 to 2011.
Of the 3192 that were killed or seriously injured in 2011, almost 1 in 8 of those are children under the age of 15.
2011 | % Change on 2010 | |
Killed | 107 | -4 |
Seriously injured | 3,085 | 16 |
Slightly injured | 16,023 | 11 |
All casualties | 19,215 | 12 |
These figures only include the numbers of cyclists killed or injured in road accidents that were reported to the police. It is well established that many cyclist casualties are not reported to the police, even when the cyclist is inured badly enough to be taken to hospital.
